3. PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCES
General competences:
 
  • be well informed about culture, history and the present of the Czech nation within the European and world context;
  • formulate views and attitudes verbally and in writing, communicate in at least one other foreign language, use technical terminology;
  • educate themselves, work in an effective way and assess impartially results;
  • adapt themselves to the changing conditions of life and work, work well in a team and be responsible for assigned tasks;
  • work with information, use ICT;
  • use basic mathematics and the basic principles of physics and chemistry when needed;
  • know the present rights and duties of employers and employees and know how to conduct a job search;
  • act in an environmentally-conscious manner and in compliance with strategies for sustainability;
  • apply the fundamentals of health, occupational safety, and fire prevention and safety.

Vocational competences:

  • perform and organise tending, breeding and keeping of different types and categories of exotic animals;
  • have a positive relationship and responsible approach to exotic animals in line with etology and welfare of animals and protect animals from maltreatment;
  • evaluate the microclimate of the sites designated for exotic animals and propose and realise relevant measures;
  • realise preventive measures in breeding and assist during veterinary procedures;
  • assess the behaviour of exotic animals and notice any deviation from normal behaviour and standard requirements for exotic animals;
  • capture, relocate and transport animals and perform simple handling and fixation of animals;
  • prepare and give food and special diets, including supplements and mineral and vitamin concentrates;
  • keep basic animal keeping records;
  • arrange the habitats of different types of animals, including background and plants;
  • provide basic information and instructions to visitors and other customers and cooperate in the educational role of ZOOs;
  • realise observations and experiments based on the instructions of scientists and experts;
  • actively participate in designing and creating new exhibits.
 
4. RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE HOLDER OF THE CERTIFICATE 
The graduate can hold middle management positions as a keeper of exotic animals in ZOOs and other sites and can work as a keeper for special-interest keeping and for keeping laboratory and furry animals and livestock, performing animal keeping activities or business activities.
Examples of possible jobs: animal keeper in a ZOO, animal keeper in a circus, veterinary assistant, pet store employee, specialist in a shelter for abandoned and handicapped animals, canine specialist, pet food specialist, pest exterminator, sanitation worker, naturalist, worker in a breeding business, public administration and local administration, employee in the environment department, research assistant.
