3. PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

General competences:

  • master different ways of learning and take responsibility for the development of one’s own potential in a lifelong perspective;
  • understand tasks or identify the core of a problem, apply various solutions, work independently and in a team;
  • apply advanced reading literacy skills to work effectively with information and to critically evaluate and interpret texts; 
  • communicate in one foreign language at least at B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and actively develop one’s own language skills;
  • apply scientific, technical, IT and mathematical knowledge, skills and procedures in practical contexts and in solving problems in various areas of life; 
  • work safely and at an advanced level with digital technologies and their software, and keep up with their development; 
  • search for, process and critically evaluate information, use algorithmic thinking, communicate and collaborate in online environments, and create digital content and models; 
  • understand the basic principles of information systems, analyse their structure and functions, design data models and adapt interfaces to user needs; 
  • be well versed in different social and value systems, as well as social, political, legal and economic processes of everyday life, and demonstrate financial and media literacy; 
  • adapt to changing social, economic and technological conditions, and make responsible economic decisions;

Vocational competences:

  • identify the products of the printing industry and distinguish between their purposes, production technologies and methods of finishing; 
  • identify the basic types of equipment used in print production at all its stages – from the processing of text and images, through the production of the printing form and the printing process itself, to finishing operations; 
  • describe the construction of printing machines, explain the principles of their operation and propose effective maintenance and operational optimisation in order to achieve maximum performance and reliability; 
  • be conversant with book production and the technologies used in the manufacture of books and other publications; 
  • competently assess and decide on the selection of the most appropriate technology for the realisation of the order;  
  • work with artistic designs and technical documentation; 
  • competently evaluate the aesthetic and technical quality of print production in accordance with the graphic design; 
  • prepare quotations, including the calculation of costs and prices for orders; 
  • use technologically correct work procedures when printing the various types of printed matter, according to the specification of the order and the type of printing machine; 
  • operate the printing machine remotely via the control console and reconfigure the machine via software during production; 
  • operate the individual printing machines, including their optimum setting and the adjustment of the printing units; 
  • detect and rectify faults arising during printing; 
  • ensure that the required quality parameters of the production processes and the final products are met;  
  • perform quality control of the printed output and carry out corrections during the printing run.

4. RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE HOLDER OF THE CERTIFICATE

Graduates will find employment in mid-level technical, operational and managerial functions in the operation and setting-up of printing machines for all types of print production. Another option is employment in advertising agencies and graphic studios. Graduates are also prepared to work on a self-employed basis in the printing industry, for example in running small printing facilities, digital studios or made-to-order production of printed matter.

Examples of possible positions: print production technician, printer, printing equipment operator, production worker in publishing houses, technical print preparation worker, print production quality control worker, prepress preparation specialist.
