3. PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

General competences:

  • master different ways of learning and take responsibility for the development of one’s own potential in a lifelong perspective; 
  • understand tasks or identify the core of a problem, apply various solutions, work independently and in a team; 
  • apply reading literacy skills to work effectively with information and to evaluate texts; 
  • communicate in one foreign language at least at A2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);  
  • apply basic scientific, technical, IT and mathematical knowledge, skills and procedures in practical contexts and in solving problems in various areas of life; 
  • work safely with digital technologies and their software, and keep up with their development;  
  • search for, process and critically evaluate information, use algorithmic thinking, communicate and collaborate in online environments, and create digital content and simple models;   
  • understand the basic principles of information systems, analyse their structure and functions;  
  • be well versed in different social and value systems, as well as social, political, legal and economic processes of everyday life, and demonstrate financial and media literacy;   
  • adapt to changing social, economic and technological conditions, and make responsible economic decisions;   
  • strive for the highest quality of one’s own work, services and products in accordance with technological procedures and quality standards;   
  • observe the principles of occupational health and safety, and fire protection. 

Vocational competences:

  • apply principles of handling and communication with horses and other farm animals, safely restrain them, and work in cooperation with owners, breeders, riders and veterinarians; 
  • provide hoof care and treatment of cloven-hoofed animals, apply bandages if needed, and carry out chemical treatment; 
  • assess a horse before hoof trimming or shoeing while standing, walking, and trotting, focusing on individual phases of movement; evaluate any lameness and its cause; 
  • evaluate hoof growth, trim hooves without shoeing or prior to shoeing, including basic orthopedic interventions; 
  • remove shoes, trim, balance, and shoe regular hooves; 
  • assess horses after trimming or shoeing while standing, walking, and trotting on hard ground, and evaluate the correctness and appropriateness of the performed procedure; 
  • classify, trim, and shoe irregular hooves; 
  • manually produce or repair various types of horseshoes for regular, irregular, and diseased hooves; 
  • work with technical documentation, read technical drawings, and understand applicable technical standards and regulations; 
  • apply suitable technological procedures in manufacturing, repair, and refurbishment of machine components; 
  • select and use appropriate materials for manual horseshoe production and machine components; 
  • use plastic and aluminum horseshoes and apply modern farriery techniques (pads, cushions, adhesives); 
  • perform welding in at least two of the following welding courses: basic oxy-fuel welding course or arc welding (covered electrode or MIG/MAG welding) or training course for operating oxy-fuel welding equipment (manual flame soldering). 
  • drive motor vehicles of categories T (tractor), B (passenger car) and C (truck).

4. RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE HOLDER OF THE CERTIFICATE

Graduates may find employment as farriers in horse husbandry, including draft, rehabilitation, recreational, sport, and racing horses, as well as in hoof care for other farm animals.  They may also find employment in agricultural machinery repair for crop production and animal husbandry, including manufacturing, refurbishment, and repair of components, particularly hot metal shaping and heat treatment of metals, in related mechanical engineering sectors, maintenance, and service operations.
Examples of possible job positions: farrier, hoof trimmer, agricultural blacksmith, agricultural machinery mechanic, mechanic, maintenance worker, blacksmith, welder.
