3. PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

General competences:

  • master different ways of learning and take responsibility for the development of one’s own potential in a lifelong perspective; 
  • understand tasks or identify the core of a problem, apply various solutions, work independently and in a team; 
  • apply reading literacy skills to work effectively with information and to evaluate texts; 
  • communicate in one foreign language at least at A2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);  
  • apply basic scientific, technical, IT and mathematical knowledge, skills and procedures in practical contexts and in solving problems in various areas of life; 
  • work safely with digital technologies and their software, and keep up with their development;  
  • search for, process and critically evaluate information, use algorithmic thinking, communicate and collaborate in online environments, and create digital content and simple models;   
  • understand the basic principles of information systems, analyse their structure and functions;  
  • be well versed in different social and value systems, as well as social, political, legal and economic processes of everyday life, and demonstrate financial and media literacy;   
  • adapt to changing social, economic and technological conditions, and make responsible economic decisions;   
  • strive for the highest quality of one’s own work, services and products in accordance with technological procedures and quality standards;   
  • observe the principles of occupational health and safety, and fire protection. 

Vocational competences:

  • operate and maintain machinery and equipment, and vessel systems; 
  • set the required parameters and operating conditions of machinery and equipment of vessels, depending on operating conditions; 
  • unchain, balance and secure vessels in harbours, anchor manipulate, maneuver the craft into the desired positions to perform work during the sorting and reporting of vessels; 
  • operate under the supervision of Captain helm vessels (under the responsibility of the captain of a vessel) and use auxiliary devices for navigation or cooperate with their operation and use; 
  • analyze, interpret and use data for measuring, controlling and signalling equipment of vessels; 
  • intervene in the management of operational machinery and equipment of vessels; 
  • check the technical condition of machinery and equipment of vessels; 
  • identify faults in the operation of technical equipment of vessels, properly analyze failures and implement appropriate corrective action; 
  • service machinery and equipment of vessels, carry out their routine maintenance, exchange and complement operating fluids and fuel supplement; 
  • use appropriate instruments, tools, gauges and instruments during work; 
  • use technical and service documentation during work; 
  • distinguish characteristic structural features of inland vessels, reflect their basic properties and the possibility of typical use; 
  • use knowledge of geography and navigation laws governing traffic on inland waterways; 
  • identify and properly analyze traffic signs on the waterways, including light and sound signals used in shipping; 
  • ensure proper progress of work during loading and unloading of vessels and observe the relevant safety regulations applicable in the goods and passenger transport.

4. RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE HOLDER OF THE CERTIFICATE

The graduate is employed in the field of inland shipping in the operation and in repair of marine machinery and mechanisms, in control of vessels and handling, and in the safe transport of goods and passenger vessels.

Examples of possible jobs: boatman, ship engineer.
