3. PROFILE OF SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

General competences:

  • master different ways of learning and take responsibility for the development of one’s own potential in a lifelong perspective;
  • understand tasks or identify the core of a problem, apply various solutions, work independently and in a team;
  • apply advanced reading literacy skills to work effectively with information and to critically evaluate and interpret texts; 
  • communicate in one foreign language at least at B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and actively develop one’s own language skills;
  • apply scientific, technical, IT and mathematical knowledge, skills and procedures in practical contexts and in solving problems in various areas of life; 
  • work safely and at an advanced level with digital technologies and their software, and keep up with their development; 
  • search for, process and critically evaluate information, use algorithmic thinking, communicate and collaborate in online environments, and create digital content and models; 
  • understand the basic principles of information systems, analyse their structure and functions, design data models and adapt interfaces to user needs; 
  • be well versed in different social and value systems, as well as social, political, legal and economic processes of everyday life, and demonstrate financial and media literacy; 
  • adapt to changing social, economic and technological conditions, and make responsible economic decisions; 
  • strive for the highest quality of one’s own work, services and products in accordance with technological procedures and quality standards;  
  • choose optimal solutions in real-life work and personal situations based on the interconnection of environmental, economic and social factors;
  • observe the principles of occupational health and safety, and fire protection.

Vocational competences:

  • perform and organize caretaking, rearing and breeding of specific species and categories of exotic animals; 
  • have a positive attitude and responsible approach when working with exotic animals, in accordance with ethology and animal welfare principles, ensuring the protection of animals from maltreatment; 
  • evaluate the microclimates of structures designated for exotic animals and adopt adequate precautions; 
  • assess the technical condition of animal husbandry facilities and ensure their maintenance; 
  • prepare and provide feed and specialized diets, including mineral and vitamin supplements, according to the needs of individual exotic animal species; 
  • assess the life patterns of the bred animals and note deviations from their normal state and the standard needs of exotic animals; 
  • realize preventive measures in exotic animal breeding, assist during veterinary operations, cure sick and injured animals under the guidance of a veterinarian; 
  • catch, move and transport animals, perform simple manipulations and tethering; 
  • keep breeding documentation; 
  • arrange biotopes of various kinds of exotic animals, facades and plant decoration, take part in conceptualization and creation of new expositions; 
  • provide basic information and guidance on the keeping and care of exotic animals; 
  • cooperate in the culturally-didactic activities of zoological gardens; 
  • perform observation and experimentation according to the instructions of scientific and expert professionals.

4. RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS ACCESSIBLE TO THE HOLDER OF THE CERTIFICATE

Graduates may find employment primarily in the care and management of exotic animals at zoological gardens, farms, hobby breeding facilities, pet stores, shelters for abandoned or disabled animals, and other institutions keeping exotic or laboratory animals. They may also work in livestock farming, feed production, breeding operations, sanitation services, environmental departments, public administration, research, as well as in hunting and canine-related activities.

Examples of possible job positions: animal breeder, animal caretaker, specialist in zoological gardens, specialist in shelters for abandoned or disabled animals, staff at naturalist stations, pet store employee, technician in feed production, worker in pest control and other sanitation services, taxidermist/preparator of natural specimens, employee in breeding operations, public administration or local government worker, environmental officer, veterinary assistant, research assistant.
